ITALIAN WINE
History of Italian wine
Italian wine has a very long and
special history.
The earliest signs of
wine in Italy date back around two million years, which is the age of some fossilized vines
(wine) which have been found there, near Arezzo to be precise.
"Italian wine" and Roman empire
It was with the Roman empire that wine acquired considerable
importance in Italy, and the widespread cultivation of vines helped it make the transition from a product for the elite to a
drink for everyday consumption.
It was in this very period that the increase in consumption encouraged
vine cultivation to spread throughout the lands occupied by the Roman empire, in
Italy and elsewhere in
Europe.
After the fall of the Roman empire, vine cultivation and
wine production in Italy went through something of a
dark age.
"Italian wine" and Middle Ages
It was only in the Middle Ages that wine production in Italy recovered and the
quality improved, primarily through the techniques used by the
Benedictine and Cistercian monks, who, over time, developed Italian wine into one of the most valued and sought-after products in the world.
"Italian wine" and Modern Ages
The production of
wine in Italy, and the experimentation that has accompanied it over many centuries, have allowed Italian wine to develop various
different dimensions, all attesting to its high quality:
colour, fragrance, taste, finish, alcohol, acidity, richness of flavour, and astringency.
On the basis of these features, indeed, Italy is endowed with a number of different types of wine, being produced to a
high level of quality.
