Martina Brunello
Since I am particularly in love with this wine, I am proud to announce that Martina Brunello 2003 has arrived in our enoteca. This wine, as the name can tell, is dedicated to our daughter Martina who is almost 3 years old, and the producers are the proud parents Laura and Tony Sasa.
As last year, we produced only 1510 bottles. The first edition just flew off the shelves, and the tastings so far predict the same future for the 2003 vintage!
Le Vigne di Eli
This is a really interesting wine that comes from a small producer in Etna area. The number of bottles produced is miniscule and it’s made from the grape Nerello Mascalese. Nerello is an indigenous grape variety for Etna, and it has a big history and an awesome aging potential.
I found this wine very friendly, and it shows that it’s made with an immense passion. This wine is best understood when you are in a meditative mindset – a glass to match with the right mood and the right moment.
The label of this wine was drawn by the 3-year old daughter of the winemaker, and each year a new drawing is chosen for the label. In fact even the name of the wine is dedicated to her - to the little Elena, or Eli.
Some of the proceeds from this wine are donated to Florence's Meyer Pediatric Hospital.
Laura Moscato d'Asti DOCG, Boeri estate
Introductions are not necessary regarding this estate: Boeri is certainly one of the most interesting and accomplished producers of barbera (and not only) in Piemonte.
I want to bring your attention to another gem made by these courageous winemakers: their Moscato. It is even better than last year (which was superlative) and the price is surprisingly affordable. I recommend you stock up on this one.
Laura is an exclusive label made by Boeri for Enoteca Pontevecchio - it is dedicated to the winemaker's wife, Laura.
This moscato has a seductive bouquet of delicate white flowers and honey. On the palate, it has just the right sweetness, and the elegant finish hints at pink apples and cantaloupes. The final impression is freshness and effervescent playfulness.
Le Caniette estate
An estate with great white wines. The winemakers are committed organic productions, and the appealing personality of their wines shows this. I like very much their base wine Lucrezia, whose grape is Passerina. The wine has a nice body, good structure and it is a really easy drinking wine. I really enjoyed it when I matched it with a risotto or with my home made pesto lasagna.
Among their red wines, I really enjoyed Morellone – Rosso Piceno: beautiful wine with nice, balanced fruit; it’s a great match for braised meats and stews.
Zerbina estate
A very interesting new arrival that is hugely appreciated by enoteca’s guests is Tergeno from the Zerbina estate. This is a semi-sweet wine but with very distinguished personality. Cristina, the owner of Zerbina, is without a doubt a great winemaker: she does not pay attention to the market trends and is guided only by her intuition and love.
Santa Lucia estate
I have known Santa Lucia estate for a long time, and must say they have achieved some further improvements in the quality of the wines they obtain from their Uva di Troja grape variety. Their best wine is, in my opinion, Vigna del Melograno 2006.
Battagliola
What about Lambrusco Battagliola? No big discussions are needed: just pop the bottle and enjoy it on these hot summer days.
Ornella Molon
This estate makes a great sauvignon – one not to be missed!
Lazzeretti
Since I must not omit speaking of Brunellos, the one new wine producer I enjoy particularly is Lazzeretti – both their Brunello and their Rosso di Montalcino 2006 are outstanding. Their Rosso is a great everyday wine for almost any type of meal.
Padelletti
Another Brunello I realy love is Padelletti and their 1998 vintage is definitely worth buying.
Corsini Ruggeri
If I think about Piemonte I will say Corsini Ruggeri is doing some very interesting wines.
San Leo
This superlative, organic extra virgin olive oil will please any gourmet. Cold pressed from hand-picked olives, it is best suited to be served raw, on salads, grilled vegetables and meats, and even on baked fish. Just a few drops on a simple tossed pasta will turn it into a delight.
Mostarda di Chianti
This organic preserve embodies the best of Tuscan traditions. Made from chianti wine (78%), raw cane sugar, apples, peperoncino and spices, it lends itself to many creative uses in your kitchen. Great with a cheese platter but also with roasted meats, for example.
The producer, Radici, is one of the front runners in organic production in Tuscany. |
